No lack of water

Greetings,

I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s rain, as long as it doesn’t get too carried away. We haven’t had to irrigate for six weeks which has been a welcome relief. The crops also respond better to rain than to irrigation. The humidity had caused some disease problems, but so far that’s outweighed by the healthy growth of the majority of the crops. So let it rain, moderately.

Blueberries have slowed enough that we aren’t picking for market anymore, but there are still enough for anyone who wants to pick here at the farm. You just have to be more diligent than previously.

Sadly, basil has succumbed again this year to basil downy mildew. We used to harvest for two and a half months, but now with this widespread disease we barely get a month. It’s hard to get used to after growing it commercially for 30 years without a problem.

There are a few eggplant again this week. I think they’re going to come in a trickle all season this year.

The rain and cooler temps will slow the squash and beans so I’m not sure we’ll have enough, but we’ll see.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and thank you for your orders.

Tim

Purple potatoes, onions and more

Greetings,

The site seems to be having a problem sending this email so I’m trying a third time. My apologies if you’re getting this multiple times.

We’re adding a number of veggies this week; Purple Majesty potatoes, Ailsa Craig onions, Tropea onions, Juliet tomatoes, and green beans.

Blueberries are still plentiful, but slowing down. This will probably be the last week we offer them online, though u-pick may continue next week.

The second planting of cucumbers has begun to bear fruit so we should have those again.

Squash is in a slowdown, but we’ll hope to provide.

The eggplant didn’t size up enough to offer this
week.

The first planting of golden beets is about over, but we’ll see what we can find for those who want some.

I estimated the number of cherry tomatoes so if they’re sold out and you want some you can ask in the comment section and we’ll provide if we can.

The price for tomatoes is now $3.50/lb.

I think that’s it. I hope you’re enjoying the harvest and thank you for your orders.

What's new

Greetings,

Blueberry season is still in full swing and it’s a bountiful one this year. if you’ve been thinking about picking for the freezer now is the time.

We’ve added cherry tomatoes, although the amount available is just a guess. If the website says the cherry tomatoes are sold out and you want some you can say so in the comment section and if more are available we’ll add them to your order.

The price for the tomatoes is now $4.00/lb.

Eggplant are still just coming in a little at a time.

The first *cucumber *planting has fizzled out and the second is just beginning so hopefully there will be more next week.

Unfortunately, basil downy mildew has appeared already so I have to plow under the first planting of basil and hope that the second one isn’t too affected. That’s a good dose of wishful thinking, but we’ll see.

Tomorrow we harvest all the garlic and put it in the barn to cure so it will keep for many months. That should be a happy task since the crop is looking so good this year.

July is coming to a close and hopefully the humidity with it. At least we haven’t had to irrigate since July 2!

Thanks for your orders.

Enjoy,
Tim

Carrots and garlic

Greetings,

New this week are carrots and garlic. We pulled some garlic fresh from the ground just before going to market today. The bulbs are looking beautiful with many being a good size. And very pungent! This is the 22nd year we’ve been growing it out from our own stock.

As it says on the site the garlic is $9/lb, but since most people only want one or two bulbs at a time we offer them for $1.50 each and then adjust the price up or down for each bulb according to weight. The actual price appears on your invoice.

Chioggia and golden beets are back. We’re in an arugula gap. We plant every week, but missed a week due to rain. Peas are over for the season. The red potatoes are as scab-free as I’ve ever seen them. Hopefully, they’ll stay that way, and the other varieties as well.

The first cucumber planting didn’t appreciate the recent rains and humidity, but should produce enough to provide for another couple of weeks. And then the second planting should begin to bear.

The bull’s horn peppers are now offered. At this point they’re just like a regular green bell pepper, only a different shape. Later they’ll start turning red and sweeter which is when they’re most popular.

A few eggplant are ready. For various reasons the plants are growing slowly.

We continue to plant and weed, plant and weed. All that begins to let up next month.

Thank you as ever for all your orders.

Enjoy,
Tim

Blueberries

Greetings,

Blueberry season has begun. We’ll have* u-pick blueberries* beginning tomorrow, Wednesday the 16th. Hours will be Wed. – Sun. 8 to 5.

If you want to order blueberries it would be helpful to get in your order by Wednesday night, if possible. This gives us time to pick on Thursday.

We’re also adding red potatoes and cucumbers this week. Chioggia and Golden beets are getting a break so the remaining ones can grow a bit more.

I’m estimating the amount of peas, but we should have at least as much as the amounts given.

Thanks a lot for your orders.

Plenty of Shell Peas!

Hello,

I wasn’t sure until now how many shell peas we would have this week, but we’re picking a lot so if you’re interested in freezing a quantity of peas or just want to eat a lot of them now is the time.

If you order 5lbs or more the price is $3.50/lb. 10 lbs or more would be $3.00/lb.

If you already ordered over 5lbs for this week you’ll get the discount. And any amount you ordered under 5 lbs would be added to your total amount.

*YOU CAN EMAIL THE AMOUNT YOU WANT (no need to place another order through the website) AND WE’LL ADD IT TO YOUR ORDER.

Thanks,
Tim

peas, peppers and more

Greetings,

We’re back to the usual Friday pick-up time, with orders due by Thursday night at 8:00.

I’ve added shell peas, sugar snap peas, green and purple peppers, romaine lettuce, and tomatoes.

Cucumbers and blueberries should be added next week, with u-pick blueberries probably starting next Wednesday, July 16. I’ll keep you posted.

Thank you for your orders.

Enjoy,
Tim

Shell pea update

Shell peas!

Hi,

Walking around the field after the storm I found that the shell peas have started to ripen up in the warm weather sooner than expected.

I hope to pick in the morning if I have the time.

If you would like to have some you can just email me an amount by noon tomorrow and we’ll add them to your order. The price is $4.00/lb.

No guarantees, but hopefully we’ll have some.

Thanks,
Tim
