Honey

Hello,

I forgot to mention that we also have some honey from our bees. I added it to the site. We also have 1/2 pound jars for $3.50 that you can order in the comment section.

last order

Greetings,

This is the last order for 2008.

Unfortunately, we don’t have garlic or onions left, let alone in bulk this year.

We do have Kennebecs at $1.20/pound for 20 pounds or more and carrots at $1.40/pound for 10 pounds or more.

Also, beets at $1.40/pound for 10 pounds or more.

Other than that there are still a few items on the list.

THANK YOU for all your orders this season!

And thank you to those who left boxes at the farm. They were very helpful.

I’ll be in touch this winter to see who is interested in signing on for the 2009 season. May it be a drier one!

If you have any suggestions or comments please pass them along.

Thanks,
winding down

Greetings,

Cooler days and colder nights. The crops are slowing down.

Next week will be the last official market. If we don’t get a frost and produce is still available after that I’ll let people know in case you want to order more.

I have some spinach now, enough for a pound or two per order, depending on the number of orders.

I also put the green cabbage on the list.

I’m sorry that we haven’t had much broccoli this season. There’s a lot of potential heads out there, but it’s doubtful that they’ll mature in time.

Enjoy the beautiful fall weather and thanks as ever for your orders.

what's new

Greetings,

We now have baby bok choy, nice for stir fry and soups. As with so many crops, the rain slowed the growth of the bok choy so it’s quite small, but still good. I’ve taken it to market at this stage before.

We also have some small green cabbage. It’s not listed so if you would like some please mention in the comment section. It’s $1.40 per pound. I’ll adjust the invoice accordingly.

I may be able to make a last picking of beans.

Squash season is over and sadly this is the last week for cucumbers.

Thanks for your orders,
Good morning

Hello,

Yesterday’s rain (after 5 inches on Saturday night – such a summer) made a bullseye on our big farmer’s market outside Boston. Despite the thunder and downpours a good number of people showed up with umbrellas, raincoats and bags. A gallows humor and good mood prevailed.

What is striking about this to me after 22 years at this market is how the commitment to the market has grown in just the past few years. The idea of eating locally when possible and thus supporting area farms continues to grow. I think it’s a fundamentally sound idea and will prove to be more than a fad.

Another small example of how quickly an idea can spread is the number of people who now bring their own bag to market. We used to hand out many hundreds of plastic handle bags every season. Now it’s relatively rare. It’s a big difference even from last year.

Meanwhile, the buckwheat is in bloom and filled with bees and we’re taking honey off the hives. Fall crops of spinach, bok choy, cabbage and more broccoli are on the way.

And tonight is to be in the upper thirties!?

Enjoy,
onions

Wait!…before you take a bite out of an Ailsa Craig onion (or are they Candy?) as though it’s an apple, be warned; we harvested this years (very) modest crop on Wednesday and judging by the shape of some of the onions it may be that the nursery in Delaware mixed up the varieties.

We’ve separated in the barn what should be the mild and sweet onions from what should be the Copras BUT I can’t be fully confident that they are what they should be.

You’ll know the difference if you take a taste. If your preparing a dish that requires one or the other you might want to sample before you cook.

I’m sorry about this confusion and hope it’s not a big problem, but let me know if it is.

Thanks,
September

Greetings,

As you may notice we have some onions now. Those listed as Ailsa Craig are either Ailsa Craigs or a variety called Candy. To avoid starting the greenhouse early this year I got my onions from an organic nursery in Delaware. They didn’t ship well and it took several trys with the end result being a mix of varieties. In any case, they’re both sweet and mild types.

The Copras are a stronger cooking onion and store well.

We’re in a bean and broccoli gap at the
moment.

The garlic suffered a lot from all the rain so we don’t have our usual abundance. Most of what’s left will be needed for planting for next year. Those who bought garlic may come across some bad bulbs or cloves. I apologize and will compensate in some way if you wish.

Enjoy,
good morning

Greetings,

What a difference nice weather makes to crops and mood. We’re happily irrigating again.

Blueberry season was the longest we’ve had yet, but is now over. I hope those who ordered enjoyed them.

What’s on the list should be available, though beans and the strangely behaving squash might come up short. We have another planting of beans that could be ready next week.

We’ll be harvesting onions next week and have spinach and baby bok choy coming along in a while. We’re also still planting salad mix and arugula, and setting out lettuce from the greenhouse.

Hopefully cherry tomatoes will start coming on strong like they usually do so we don’t have to short anyone like last week. Sorry about that.

Leeks are now available.

Thanks for your orders and enjoy,
what's new

Greetings,

It rained last night. And again this morning as we got ready for farmer’s market. But that’s it, right? For awhile?

The greenhouse tomatoes are over and we’re picking from the field now. The price is $3/pound to start.

And we’re digging Kennebec potatoes now, a white potato for baking, mashing, and general use.

Squash is behaving very oddly again this week. We’ve only been picking from the second planting for 10 days or so, but the yield has dropped to a small amount. A perfect storm of conditions seems to have rotted one stage of fruit. Hopefully, they’ll rebound when they grow past that. You can order and we’ll hope for the best.

The availability of blueberries is up in the air. They’re out there today, but by Friday?

Enjoy the weather,
cherry tomatoes

Hello,

The picker of the cherry tomatoes made a valiant effort to fill the orders and picked some a bit under-ripe, so you might want to let some of them sit for a day or two to ripen more.

Also, the squash didn’t ripen much the last couple of days. Sorry for those who were shorted.

Please let me know if you find a math problem or something missing or a quality issue so we can try to make things right.

Thanks for your orders. No rain today!
