The spicy green usually used to liven up a salad. Some people eat it on it's own. Then there were the two women desperate to find some so they could make their peanut butter and arugula sandwiches. Worth a try if you've never had it (arugula, that is). Very popular at our Newton Ma. farmer's market.

We grow a variety called Sweet Basil which is great for pesto, drying and general use. We make three plantings to insure a constant supply all season. Our bunches yield about two cups of chopped leaves. I've been growing basil on a large scale since 1982 and have never tired of the aroma. We save it for the last crop to harvest at the end of the day; handling the plants releases the smell which has a soothing and relaxing effect. Very nice after a long day's labor.

We grow three varieties; Patriot, Blueray and Bluecrop. Harvest is from about mid-July to mid-August. Last year was the first season that we were hard pressed to harvest them all for market. If that looks to be the case again this year we'll open the field for u-pick. Stay tuned.

This is a Boston/bibb type with a center head of softer, somewhat thicker leaves. In the heat of the summer the center head doesn't always form, but the leaves are of a similar quality.

The main variety we grow is called Nelson.Bunches are one pound or more. Later in the season we sell them loose by the pound. In the fall we have a storage variety called Bolero which has kept well for us and for others through the winter when packed in leaves or sand or refrigerated. The flavor is usually superior to carrots from the store even after months of storage.

This is a short, pale green, middle-eastern squash called Magda with a nice flavor that's more distinctive than zucchini or yellow squash. It's often found at farmer's markets, but still unfamiliar to most people. It's very good.

We grow a variety of field tomatoes: Estiva, Big Beef, First Lady, Pinks, Jet Star. These are all hybrids, and except for the Pinks, are all red. While heirlooms are very popular, I haven' t found them to be commercially viable due to greater disease problems and the large number that aren't marketable. Our customers have been happy over the years with the varieties we do grow.

Available beginning in late July or early August, our variety came to us without a name from a grower in Maine. It's said to have come to this country from Russia. It's a so-called stiffneck and appears to be a Rocambole type. The cloves are generally large, easy to peel, and with excellent flavor. If kept cool, dark and dry the bulbs should store into March, sometimes longer. We've been growing this from our own bulbs for 15 years so it could be considered a local garlic variety by now.

Our salad mix comes in 1/2 lb bags and consists of over forty kinds of baby lettuces (so says the label - I confess I've never counted) mixed with mild greens such as tatsoi, mizuna, Red Russian kale, and others. It does NOT have arugula or Red Giant mustard. This is a MILD mix. Arugula is usually available seperately all season for those who want to add it. Salad mix is sown every week and comes to you far fresher than any store bought mix. It often lasts a week in the fridge. We rinse it and spin it before bagging so it's relatively clean, but as with all fresh produce it's a good idea to wash it before serving. Washing and spinning it dry at home and then bagging again before refrigerating will contribute to it's keeping qualities.

We usually have both green and purple scallions, with 8 to 10 in a bunch.

This variety, called Nevada, is like a cross between romaine with it's upright leaves and thick ribs, iceberg for it's crispness, and green leaf for color and appearance. It keeps it's mild flavor during the heat of the summer and stores well in the fridge. The heads are generally large. It's a favorite at farmer's market and a favorite of mine, in part because it grows so well.
